Born August 19, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan, Monday Michiru was so named by her parents, jazz pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano, to reflect both her Japanese and American heritage. With music obviously in her blood, Monday showed interest in the arts from an early age, studying modern dance and ballet from the age of 8 (for 5 years), and classical flute from 11 years of age (for 8 years). After winning first place in several local flute competitions in Los Angeles, she attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan and was recognized for her talent and awarded a scholarship from both the Armstrong Flute Association and Interlochen Arts Academy to attend the prestigious school full time, which she did from 1979-1981. It was during her years at IAA that she discovered her other instrument, the voice, and while majoring on the flute and performing with the school orchestra, she also minored in voice, singing with the school choir and choral groups.
After graduating IAA, Monday shifted her studies from the classical flute and began concentrating on the voice more seriously. In 1987, she was scouted by a young Japanese movie director, Shinji Somai, to appear as a lead in his movie “Hikaru Onna” (“Luminous Woman”) about an opera singer; Mr. Somai was infamous in Japan for starring unknown young people who had never had previous experience in acting. Monday decided to move to Japan to coincide with the filming of the movie which, by the request of its producer, debuted her to the Japanese public under the name Michiru Akiyoshi. The film entered the International Tokyo Film Festival in 1987, earning honorable mention for Best Actress, as well as Best New Actress awards from Kinema Junpo, The Japan Academy, and the Yokohama Film Festival.

We are Brown Rice Family and we firmly believe that the most natural way is the most civilized way. BRF initially started out as a world roots band that gathers inspirations from all corners of the world in order to create fresh and healthy music. Now, however, we have evolved into an independent company. Ancient rhythms of the world inspired us to see that core values of our life are being compromised due to our society’s foolish ambition for mass production. We learned that almost all products that we consume contribute to our severe global pollution. We want to be free from these poisonous and low quality products that big companies are feeding us. We know that in order to be a true independent organization we must have control over our own necessities such as food, clothing, housing and personal care products. Our goal is to make high quality natural products that would meet the necessities of first, the Brown Rice Family. Then we want to share the same products in accordance with one love.

The Japanese Acoustic Punk Rock Band, Uzuhi is a NYC based band that has been playing since 2005. Uzuhi means the Sun in Japanese. Their name came from their strong creed, “Music has No borers”. As the Sun shines everywhere, Uzuhi plays music towards the world.
The boisterous but delicate drum beat, the elegant but brave keyboard sound, the rageful and crazy guitar shout, and the earnest and passionate vocal performance create Uzuhi’s sincere style of Punk Rock.
Once you see Uzuhi on the stage, you will be fascinated and taken away to the Uzuhi world. And you will know what the real happiness is.
They sing from their heart, ”We are not smart. We are not strong. But, we play music!”

The body goes beyond words.
It is neither a full length novel nor a two hour theatrical play.
All is dedicated in a song that does not even last a mere five minutes.
There, lies an almost tragic, yet passionate expression of emotion.
Japanese culture and hundreds of other cultures
Our project's foundation is created when these meet.
It is based on a traditional yet contemporary dance form called Yosakoi.
While holding a prop called "Naruko" in both hands,
The dancers intensely and dramatically dance as the chanter's cryinstigates the piece.
Various expression is created when all of the above is combined.
"10tecomai", a Yosakoi Dance Project.
This dance won't stop.
This dance can't be stopped.

We are New York Wild Rice. We mainly play English-language covers of legendary 80s/90s Japanese punk band The Blue Hearts. We play loud, and we play hard. We plan to eventually incorporate some original songs, but for now, our mission is to convey the passion and strong message of The Blue Hearts to the people of New York.
The band was originally conceptualized in early 2008 by Ichizo, Shingo, and another guitarist. While searching for the right bassist, the band underwent several incarnations, finally taking our current form as New York Wild Rice in November, with Ichizo on Vocals/Guitar, Yosuke on Bass, and Shingo on Drums. Nippon Jam 2008 will serve as our coming out party, but we plan to do more and more shows as we build up are repertoire, so keep your eyes/ears open for New York Wild Rice!
